Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein.  Human protein is constructed of 20 different amino acids.  Some amino acids can be made in the body and some have to be ingested and cannot be made by the body.  The later are call essential amino acids.

Chemically, they are organic compounds that contain an amino group (NH2) in the alpha position. Their chemical side chains determine the individual properties of each amino acid.
