Hypoglossal nerve stimulation:

Hypoglossal nerve stimulation is a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea utilizing an implanted neurostimulator device.  The device identifies apnea and sends a signal through an implanted wire to the hypoglossal nerve.  The nerve is activated and causes the base of the tongue to move forward correcting the apnea.  It is used in patients with moderate to severe apnea with BMI’s of less than 32 who have failed conventional therapies.
